Renoir Among Women. From the modern to the classic ideal. Collections from the Musée d’Orsay and the Musée de l’Orangerie
17/09/2016 – 08/01/2017
The exhibition includes around 60 pieces and portrays the development of Renoir’s work from a new perspective, based on his different interpretations of the female image in his work. Stands out the Dance at the Moulin de la Galette, 1876 (Musée d’Orsay, Paris).
Moreover, this exhibition represents a proposal with a special Catalan meaning: almost a century ago, in April 1917, the Palau de Belles Arts de Barcelona inaugurates the exhibition Exposició d’art francès, promoted by Ramon Casas, Santiago Rusiñol and others catalan artists. Almost 1,500 works of great French artists – like Cézanne, Degas, Manet, Monet, Morisot, Pissarro, Puvis de Chavannes, Renoir and Sisley – were presented in Barcelona. Among the works included in this exhibition there was the Dance at Moulin de la Galette, by Renoir.
One hundred years later, Renoir among women offers the opportunity to see again in Barcelona this icon of the impressionist movement. Taking advantage of the return of the Dance at the Moulin de la Galette, the exhibition is also a tribute to Catalan painters who lived and worked in Paris in the late 19th century. For this are included works by Santiago Rusiñol, Ramon Casas, Casagemas and Carlos Manuel Feliu de Lemus.
